Cosmetic Surgery

History of cosmetic surgery

The history of cosmetic surgery dates back to the ancient world.

The great Indian surgeon Susrutha along with other physicians performed reconstructive work by utilizing skin grafting as early as 8th century BC. Simple techniques such as repairing damaged ears were performed by the Romans around 1st century BC.0 There were techniques to repair a severed nose by attaching the arm to the face and letting a blood supply form then removing the arm from the new nose in the Middle Ages. Nonetheless, it was not until modern times that its use became commonplace.

However, it didn't become popular until the 19th and 20th centuries that it was actually performed. The first plastic surgeon was Dr. John Peter Mettauer in US. He carried out the first cleft palate operation in 1827 with instruments that he designed himself.
